POOLS can be compared to an art gallery where you can gaze around and hear the noises. There are really only a few mazes and very few other problems to solve. Your ability to navigate the game may occasionally be tested. But for the most part, you’re just there. Note: The game can feel oppressive, but there aren’t any monsters chasing you or leaping at you out of nowhere. POOLS capitalizes on anxieties of being lost, the dark, and confined quarters. There is no conversation or user interface in the game. No music in the background. Rather, the game creates the impression that you are actually there through the use of sounds.

Depending on the room you’re in, the sounds and echo vary. It takes longer to walk in water. These factors all contribute to the game’s heightened realism and suspenseful mood. There are no characters to meet, no standard plot, and no notes in the game. However, as you go and explore more, you begin to observe how the game’s environment changes all around you. Every room feels and looks different. Every chapter offers something different. You’re constantly discovering new locations, each with its own unique mystery. Each of POOLS’s six distinct chapters takes ten to thirty minutes to complete. The online phenomena “liminal spaces,” “found footage,” and “backrooms”—more especially, “backrooms pools” or “poolrooms”—were the inspiration for POOLS.
